Mystical Teaching
The Central Bhutan dzongkhag (district) of Bumthang is home to a great Buddhist teacher, Pema Lingpa. The royal family traces its origin to this revered teacher. A blacksmith, Pema Lingpa is believed to have been led by mystic forces to unearth spiritual treasures or termas.
Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche or Padmasambhava placed these spiritual treasures at the bed of the Membartsho or Flaming Lake. Pema Lingpa was unaware of the way to disseminate the knowledge contained in the treasures, until one day the female heavenly spirits called the Dakinis showed him the power of preaching. According to legend, flowers dropped from the sky and vanished into rays of light as he spoke.
