A Detour to Remember
Gangtey is the largest town of the Phobjika Valley in Bhutan. It is located to the east of the town of Wangdue Phodrang. The central attraction of the town is the monastery of Gangtey Gompa dating back to the seventeenth century. The finest available artists and craftsmen from all over Bhutan were employed in its restoration, which was complete in 2008.
The black-necked cranes migrate to the valley below the Gangtey in winter from the high plains of the Tibetan plateaus. A trip to Gangtey is a short detour to the south off the main west-east road. The pleasing geography of the area is likely to make this tour a memorable one.
