Eat to Live
Rich in nutrients, Bhutanese diet is stuffed with meat, egg, milk, grains such as red rice and white rice, and vegetables. The national dish is Ema Datsi, which in common understanding is a gravy-like stew of chili and cheese. It is available in a number of variations in different parts of the country. Chili is widely grown in the country and is by far the popularmost spice, with meat dishes of poultry, beef, pork, and yak meat dishes containing copious quantities of the spice.
Suja, which is a salted butter tea, is a popular beverage. The locals also savour the taste of the local beer called chang and a spirit called arra distilled from rice, maize, and wheat and barley. Offering betel nut or doma is a customary gesture of greeting.
