Throbbing with Life
Thimpu, the capital of Bhutan shares its name with the valley where it is located, as also the dzongkhag or district which it is a part of. Located in a gently undulating landscape, Thimpu is served by the City Bus and Bhutan Taxi. Thimpu has the unique distinction of being among the very few capital cities in the world without traffic lights.
Dominating the skyline of the capital is the sparkling white Memorial Chorten with a glittering golden crest built in memory of the third king Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Other prominent landmarks in this picturesque town include the palace and the parliament, the National Library built in 1967, the Bhutan Broadcasting Service Corporation tower located at the highest point of the town, as also the Thimpu river. With an architecture resembling a Roman amphitheater, the Clock Square Tower area is a popular hangout.
